The MC is a largely shut-in, secretive, bumfuck-nowhere-living guy. Plotting against her is the only way to introduce a plot line where he gets plotted against at all, even if tangentially lol.

Gotta have that slice of politics and drama on your fantasy slice-of-life, i guess. Also, there’s always some stinkin (optionally fat and/or ugly) nobles/politician who want to conspire their way to the top.

Because the "big bad" is a villainous faction of demons.

The crown prince of the kingdom sent an army to get wiped by Yuki and Lefi. Then started a coup/civil war and imprisoned the king and princess. And then it turns out that the prince was dead/puppeted by the demons.

So these demons are acting subtly to destroy the kingdom. Nell went on a diplomatic mission to another country, and they decided to try to undermine the HERO while she's away. Makes sense to me.
