Didn’t he like fight on par with the most powerful demon kings in existence. Isn’t the whole plot of this story that his only real opponent would be the hero. If what I understand is true, then this random nobody character that wants to kill the prince is as strong as the legendary demon kings… what is going on with this writing?

Why do we have to narratively nerf our MC for some forced drama? Dude's centuries old with training from two of the strongest beings in the world; there's no reason he shouldn't be embarrassing this random guy.

He got complacent, other guy has the resolve to kill some kids (eventually, after numerous warnings) while the MC can't seem to realize that if you can't stop your enemy from sliding into your personal space, then you should stop trying to turn it into a ranged fight, where you can shock and awe him into settling this with a discussion.

No freaking way this is happening. If you are hundreds of times stronger than your opponent, no lack of resolve will stop you from beating him without killing him. The MC has trained for way longer than this guy, him going easy on the enemy SHOULD be obvious with how utterly over powered the MC is. What the hell do you mean close quarters combat is your weakness? What is that sword you are carrying for? A decoration? What kind of intense training did the demon and dragon lords put you through that a normal human has you on the ropes with a sword? Swords are close quarter combat weapons, you should be trained on how to handle punches and kicks as well as sword strikes. Like I said, what kind of training did he do with the sword? Sniping?

We saw them repeat this lecture when they beat his ass, to force him to take their graduation fight seriously, so... yeah, he's probably going to have to have another flashback in a month or so when he forgets this lesson again.

You said it yourself, it's to force drama. The author simply forgot that the MC he created was over powered, so he had him lose a one on one against a human with a sword...

That's a shit excuse. If a pre-school kid comes at you with a butter knife, you don't need the resolve to kill in order to stop the child from hurting you or hurting himself. Everyone in the world should be like small children when compared to the MC, given the training he's gone through.
