But seriously, I have no idea how english-speakers could get, out of the name Richard, not the most common to be nickname Rich, Richie etc, but Dick.

I mean, at least as far as I know most nicknames in my language that are related to a name are either a piece or phonetic shortening of the name, or of its diminutive. Roberto becoming Beto, José Zé (the s sounds like a z in the name), João Jão, Álvaro Alvinho, things like that.
