Wonderful chapter. The character arc for both these guys has been so moving and beautiful. And the shogi match we're heading into, with the weight of all that growth, and the depth of their relationship, not even mentioning all the development of their respective shogi styles...

Ahh!! I love this series so much!!!

Oooo good shit. Okay I'm all in on this match now. Shimada's been needing a push for a while now. I'm honestly torn on what I want to happen. I want Shimada to have his title, but after that last line I kind of want him proven wrong, because I want to think this healthier Rei can be just as good if not better.

That last page I wonder what Shimada meant by that. Is he like "He's more human so I'll have easier time beat him the way he is now" or "He's become more human so he is a worthy opponent for me"?
He has been chasing the spectre that is Souya
and the old Kiriyama are close to the inhuman Souya as he threw everything into Shogi and left little to no on other aspect of life.

Kiriyama is now closer to "normal human" as he gain happiness in life outside shogi and to Shimada, he is "easier" to "read" and beat now compare to the ghost-like old Kiriyama.

but the next chapter might prove him wrong.

Go get him, Rei-chan!!!

I wonder if their next match will be the opposite of their last match—it'll be Shimada who'll "underestimate" Kiriyama instead.

But Shimada is not an amateur to make that kind of mistake...

Thank you, translation team!

Funny, seems like Shimada's reaching something Rei reached long ago: the realization of the potential weakness caused by his happiness. What Rei has, though, is the memory of that very source of "weakness" standing determined on a bench to stare him straight in the eyes and declare that she wants to do everything she can, together with him, to ensure that she never weakens him in any way. I'm hoping it happens now, but I'm sure at some point we'll see him prove that this sort of weakness can very easily become a strength.

Every time the water recedes, the sand beneath my feet is pulled away with it. It takes everything I have just to keep standing facing forward. Simply put, it's that kind of place

Now that I think about it, this manga tends to analogize shogi with sea, doesn't it. Rei drowning in shogi when he has no place to stand on, Shimada trying to reach Shouya as the "sands beneath his feet" is pulled away by "white crests born one after another" symbolizing his struggle to even keep his rank in shogi with everyone coming to take his place.

Also that makes it an irony because Shouya is also drowning in the depths of shogi but that is also the thing that puts him in the highest place. While people are "climbing" to reach him, Shouya is simply drowning deeper.

It's a nice thought, when this manga ends I'd love to write an analysis about it.

I think it would be best if Shimada lost because he seems to think Souya is some kind of god. The reason he lost the one of games against Souya is because he incorrectly believed Souya was infallible and this led to him missing a move that would have won him the game.
