Leads me to believe that we're using sand as a theme for Shimada. Rei was drowning in the sea, Shouya was flying in the sky and Shimada is reaching to the sky by standing on sand.
In a way, Shimada is projecting his struggle towards his opponent. A situation where he has nothing to hold on as his foothold is disappearing bit by bit.

A short chapter, but the way it showed the terror of Shimada-kun from Rei's perspective was so gripping! Those two pages felt like a chapter in themselves. The "quiet resignation with something resembling anger" feels like it encapsulates so much of Shimada's life of stress and "not quite" success...
