Those first pages made me think about a person in a funeral, then the same person so immersed in their pain and grieve that they lost sight of what's happening around them, then one day feels like they wake and start to pay attention at what's happening around again and recognize all the people supporting and caring for them.

Leads me to believe that we're using sand as a theme for Shimada. Rei was drowning in the sea, Shouya was flying in the sky and Shimada is reaching to the sky by standing on sand.
In a way, Shimada is projecting his struggle towards his opponent. A situation where he has nothing to hold on as his foothold is disappearing bit by bit.

A short chapter, but the way it showed the terror of Shimada-kun from Rei's perspective was so gripping! Those two pages felt like a chapter in themselves. The "quiet resignation with something resembling anger" feels like it encapsulates so much of Shimada's life of stress and "not quite" success...

For future reference, this chapter will be numbered differently when Volume 18 eventually comes out, when there's enough chapters produced to incorporate into it (at least one more, at bare minimum, as of this writing, but could be three or four more, for all we know- from 214 to 217 or even 218 magazine chapters total (from 202 on up) to incorporate, merge, consolidate into a 13-15 chapter tankōbon volume).

It will likely become Volume 18, Chapter 196, if it doesn't just merge into the prior one and become the second half of Volume 18, Chapter 195. Same for the next chapter, or the chapter after that, adding one to each chapter scenario.
