I love the contrast between the geezers who still have strong intuition baked into their gameplay, with thoughts like "screw it, why not take it? Taking pieces is good", vs. Kiriyama, who has studied all these lines and is thinking like 5 layers deep past "okay he'll see that this is an obvious trap" lol. Also love to see everyone else's love for my beloved Shimada

I feel a real tension reading the matches in this arc... Right from when it was revealed that this was the Lion King tournament, I expected that the finale of the series would be Kiriyama either winning it or making it to the finals against Souya-meijin. Already he's indeed made a ton of upsets and made an amazing Cinderella run. But I also know that Umino-sensei loves to have a poetic anticlimax where we least expect it... It's really compelling, not knowing who will win even on the most meta analysis, and rooting so hard for Kiriyama!!

The series has been on climax mood more or less since vol 18 went on sale... late last year? We are assuming vol 19 would be the last (Umino thinks that as well), but who knows since some of these chapters get together with others and I feel we would need an epilogue as well.

I get what you're saying, but if this is anything like chess, they're both thinking a fair bit ahead and both of them definitely know this was a kind of sacrifice. Kamakura just feels he will do better than Rei in a open, chaotic game, even with a material disadvantage.

yeah that's a good point, it's not like surface level vs deeper level, but just two different preferences in how you want the midgame to develop

I think Rei probably has to win here because Kumakura would be a narratively uninteresting place to stop. Rei has very little connection to him. I get that Sangatsu doesn’t follow the typical rules for these kinds of stories technically but I think this late in the game you can’t really pull the same fakeout as with Gotou and Shimada.

Rei has to face Souya again. He doesn’t have to win, but he does have to play him again. Otherwise I don’t think the narrative makes sense.
