@JakkRo He can't be strong against his sister because he feels guilt in that regard. He understands he is the one to have caused the rift in their family and part of the reason why she lashes out like this. Not just that, but he's not good at protecting himself, and since his issue with his "fake" sister doesn't really have much to do with needing to protect the Kawamoto, he doesn't have the drive to go balls to the walls. But in this case with this shit stain excuse of a cuckoo, it's full on protection mode for those who have protected and helped him during the roughest times of his life. He finds them utterly precious to him that he's willing to put his life on the line to protect them, and he seems to be much more of a protector of others, than one to lash out and attack anyone who attacks him. We can even see that protector side of him when he tried to go against Gotou in defense of his "fake" sister. You could even say that him leaving the Kouda family was in his way of doing the best that he can at the time to protect that family. He's a truly kind person at heart, and wants to care and protect others, but sucks at standing up for himself. We see that kindness when we see him taking care of Shimada during his matches, as well as his worry for Nikaido as well.

Man pulling out the cuckoo metaphor in front of Rei is vile. Definitely does make him sick. When Rei saw the cuckoos he saw it as how he hurts the family he was adopted into and does not want to be a person who grows through taking advantage of others. For this scumbag of a father he sees himself as a cuckoo and says “Yup, that’s me, and I’m happy with that”. It’s second nature for this piece of shit.



Love the use of the “We’re not so different, you and I” cliche use here, it makes sense AND shows the growth our protagonist has gone through ever since the metaphor.
