God damn that sweet talker is so fucking disturbing constantly smiling like that and constantly trying to take jabs emotionally. Good thing Kiriyama is putting down the foot down hard and with conviction. That's a true man, protecting the ones you love. That "father" will never be a real man, nothing but just a little cuckoo who will never grow up nor have anyone consider him actual family.

@goodhunter Heh, it's ironic that this boy cast himself away from his family thinking he was the cuckoo bird, when in reality, he was the utter opposite. He was always more than mature for his age.

Getting into court is very, very expensive, so that in itself is a real threat for the guy. But that also would actually be the decisive end of such problem because if they win, they'd have legal power to kick the guy away.
Tho doing it that way really is just painful for everyone.

So, safe to say Rei is the new man of the house.

lol I know a guy like that father. In fact, I know several men like them. They kept boasting about being Caucasian males and demanded their Asian wives to pay for their livelihood despite cheating on them. They ended up losing in court (thank god), but it took a lot of time and effort to get to that point.

Caucasians x asians being something common in relations like this there? Where is it? let me guess: Canada, or being less common, US, right? or perharps in Thailand, if still in Asia (but sadly in this case the "court" solution is not factual, so it must be in western)

Not like Rei should not take care with this guy, entering as a "strange" in this kind of situation...

But my relief is that this father looks to be a real coward, for example, not involving his own parents to help him and trying to fool his daughters. And it is placed in Japan too.

In other countries the same kind of situation, messing with a toxic ex-husband (or "ex"-father in the case) could easily ending up in tragedy.

This route is not impossible in any japanese drama, but come on, this is a story about shoji and stuff too, with moments of comedy. Would be a total switch of genre if some tragedy happens, to worse, destroying the magic of this series.

But in other mangaka/writers hands, they would be trembling to do it, since the death flags now would be toooo high.

Exactly. To be honest, the Koda family's problems lay at the feet of their father valuing Shogi above all else, something Rei could never do, ultimately. That single-minded value system warped the children, and with the warped values of the children came the warping of even the mother, seeing what her own children were going through.

For Rei, Shogi turned into a means to an end as he worked towards being able to move out of that house that his mere presence harmed thanks to the warped values of the family, and then sustained himself on it, until he found more to hold dear, as well as a reason to love Shogi again, like he used to with his real father, and not just treat it as a chore he had to be good at to survive.

If I recall correctly, this is the first time Rei spends a night in that house. It makes sense, seeing how it's a tiny house and he lives nearby, so under normal circumstances it'd be both unnecessary and cumbersome. Not like they would need any more convincing, but still for Akari and Hina this is one more sign of just how much Rei loves the Kawamoto family and is willing to exhaust himself to defend them. It will be interesting to see how the whole marriage mess will be sorted out. Rei is still taking it seriously, being a man of his word, whereas Hina thinks it was nothing but a ruse. Right now they have bigger worries, but it could be somewhat uncomfortable when they can finally sort it out.
