I don't think she truly likes that baseball guy the way she used to. And it's a first crush type of thing, I don't think there's any true depth to her feelings for the guy (not saying he's a bad guy, he's definitely a great guy as we've all seen). She's more afraid of another person she's fond of or emotionally attached to leaving her. Her mother and grandmother died, her dad abandoned her, etc. So having another person leave like that had a bigger impact than expected.

Agreed- it's just another person she knows leaving, like you say. But she takes solace in the fact Rei is still with her. He's even promised not to go anywhere, and, at least in his heart, has evolved that promise into an oath of loyalty, as of that happy moment along the river as she reminded him, painfully, that he did plenty for her. That promise and oath is going to keep changing shape- it's basically guaranteed -until it turns into a proposal (yes, that kind). I think I said something like that in the comments of either of the chapters where those events happened, but it's still as true as when I said it.

From promise to oath to confession to proposal to vows. I am eager to see all of those shifting forms for how he feels about her, and her expanding awareness of how much he means to her, as well.

I have no idea if Rei and Hina are the romance tag inducing couple of this series, but if they are, I find their relationship quite quaintly interesting, compared to most of the manga I've read. It would almost be like a childhood friend winning, despite those two not being childhood friends. There would be no dramatic falling in love, like the carpet getting pulled from under someone's feet. It would be a subtle realisation sort of thing. Hina is quite emotional and energetic, so it would be even more interesting for her to end up like that. Aftr all, he crush on Takahashi was very much the fangirl kind of idolising love. Loving someone romantically has probably never even visited Rei's mind. He was too emotionally isolated for that not long ago, plus I think feeling sick while watching the Kyoko+Gotou "romance" didn't exactly make him eager for a romance of his own.
