i think it's just more so his own insecurity (and the fact that his last relationship wasn't that great tho i don't remember anything too 'traumatizing') and a seemingly perfect 'office beauty' came outta nowhere and basically proposed to him (not that he's bad looking but it does tend to show a lot in some shows and irl couples with "Perfect tens having mid/average looking husbands" if not a bit slobby as well) as opposed to being earnest and honest about Hanamaru (her dog--tho i'm sure he might've accepted that too lol)

Not really. Committing to a long-term relationship when you don't know each other is not a good idea. It might be fun for the first 6 months or so, but if it turns out you're not compatible, after that, it's gonna suck ass. I'd rather have someone who knows what they're getting into when they commit. Less likely to fail horribly and waste a lot of both of our time and energy.

I like the message that working on yourself (appearance, health, career, personality, etc.) can be a testament of your love for another person, rather than whining about how nobody appreciates the you that's too lazy and apathetic to do something constructive with your life. But it's kind of undermined by the fact that the MC's fat friend complained about the exact same thing, continued doing nothing to improve his situation and then randomly had a hot girlfriend fall into his lap with absolutely no effort on his part.
