The Xu was family was already dead anyway. They had lost all of their elders and patriarch, which means they would be powerless to resist any random wandering expert who happened to knock down the door. And how could they have not made any enemies over the centuries? Once those enemies learned there is no power left in the Xu family, they would immediately invade. Just think back to what happened to the Holy Land when the old Holy Master died: all the surrounding sects launched an attack, which was only stopped thanks to Yang Kai appeared as the new master. The Xu family members will only survive as nameless beggars in the streets, like I said earlier. Perhaps some of the younger ones might be able to enter other families/sects and start from the bottom.
