After reading this chapter I feel like that elder is the one "training" the MC. We are assuming he was the elder that had the disciple that went full evil mode and has regretted the way he taught his disciples in the past so hadnt taken any more on in 10 years. But then he notices the MC and how he was fair, levelheaded, determined, and disciplined but lacked talent so the elder "gifted" the MC with that book and that golden bone frame by putting it near were the MC was wondering around so the MC would find it and eventually learn from the book, which is the elders teachings and/or treasure. Now he is watching over the MC without getting to closely involved so that he can give hidden assistance to see how they develop on there own and see what kinda person they are once given this power. He also might think that a hands on approach like he did with his past disciples could end poorly so thats why he keeps his distance. Not sure which it would be yet.
