I can't really understand why Yang Kai is sometimes so eager to announce his ignorance. Like what possible purpose does it serve to claim he didn't know the alchemist guild exists? If the other alchemists take that seriously, they can deduce from it he has a very peculiar background. That in itself goes against not wanting to stand out. In this very chapter he decided to fail one out of five pills on purpose to avoid standing out too much.
If he had instead said he doesn't know much about the alchemist guild because he had had no reason to consider joining before now, it would have, instead, been 100% neutral in the ears of the other alchemists. They already think he's hiding the identity of a grandmaster teacher, so not having had any use for the alchemist guild would just reinforce that. If you have got a personal teacher of the highest calibre and a sect giving you resources, you don't necessarily need to associate with the open market and the guild. But claiming not to even know the guild exists instead sounds either suspicious or arrogant.
