I agree that he's as brutal as the other people, especially when he learns he can kill an enemy. However, in the open when not provoked he can suppress those urges brought on by the skeleton.

It's perfectly standard xianxia behavior. Since the goal is to get stronger and stronger all the time, and become immortal, in a dog-eat-dog universe where there are always far more cultivators than cultivation resources, that's pretty much the only way to survive and prosper.
