the author has such a hard-on for killing off characters, it feels forced at this point.
I disagree. I think the author does a good job of highlighting the mercilessness of the wild west and the cruel world they live in. Things don't get wrapped up in a neat little napkin to make us feel good which I'm fine with. it feels more real and builds better suspense because anyone COULD die, we know the author won't just rescue them with deus ex machina like in most stories

the thing is that it always happens as more of an afterthought to preserve status quo. like fairly strong characters go off to inform someone of something but somehow some ultra powerful assassin happens to know where they are going and what they are doing and kills them off and they were travelling together with no backup plan for delivering this extremely vital intel. and of course it was as soon as they were no longer relevant to what is going on around the mc. it feels more like author went "ok im done with them but i dont want the situation to escalate yet so lets just kill them off randomly" with the net result that nothing changes, we just wasted our time with that entire plotline
