Weren't the other 2 from the hero party also tracking him with his hair? How have they not gotten there yet? Reads like days have passed since Alan, who started out at the same time or a little behind them, got there.

Not just a few days, it mentions that after Alan's event, a week passed (even before they departed for the elf village a few days later). So apparently they're slow as hell, unless maybe Alan used some kind of "hero perk" to commandeer a carriage or something.

The kingdom chooses whoever has the Hero title. Just like how someone with the Saint title is called a Saint or Saintess. What a realistic kingdom should do is to put one or more of their trusted veterans into the Hero's party not just to get a report on events handled, but to make sure the Hero is constantly steered to support the kingdom.
