It's interesting to me that everyone's taking issue with the dragon when I think he actually made some valid points. Of course her situation unfair and sad but she's focusing it all on him when that's not really the full story. First her dad set this up (and mom approved) and it's the stupid system of their society that really initiated this sort of predicament. Secondly, if she felt so strongly about this, like he said, she could have just left. Now of course in the grand scheme of things she shouldn't have to leave home to pursue what she loves, that said, leaving would have been more prudent than challenging him. He's known as a great swordsman so why would you make a bet using swordsmanship and waging what you love to do most? In reality she wanted to make a show of beating him as clearly seen by her donning her wedding dress to face off with him. She wanted the satisfaction of besting him like all her previous suitors while sticking it to people's expectations but ended up letting her desperation/cockiness get the best of her. While I do sympathize with her misery at losing and admire her guts, he's right that she's running away. It's true she not honoring her side of the deal and even if you throw that out, why stop fighting at the first loss? She's not in a situation yet where there are no options, there are still other things she can try. I think though it's a good place for her character to start off. She's bold and determined but she can work on her forethought and resilience.
I don't particularly love or hate any character yet, rather I think we're getting to see what makes them interesting and flawed.
