It needs to be said but punching a rikishi in the gut is going to do jack shit.
They're massive beasts with immense walls of abdominal muscle and a thick armour of body fat to cushion surface blows and the good ones are deceptively agile on their feet with years of training against guys strong enough to do some real damage with palm slaps.

Naruse getting in that close would have got squelched by the big lad.
But weight classes don't mean much in manga...

@subliminal - Punching a person in the diaphragm causes things like suffocation, disorientation, etc. He already stated he uses his kicks because his punches were stronger in an earlier chapter.

An exposed stomach is basically a large opening. Sure his muscles around his body are a thick layer of armor, but if you looked at the panels, he was talking about head-on charges with the shoulders, arms, head. etc.

But the strike is way too low for a diagphram hit, and his muscles should be tense from the turning motion. Yeah you can incapacitate that way if you get the positioning right and with sumo he won't be used to defending that sort of strike or the follow ups. But that strike wouldn't do it.

@Davy0 Against a Rikishi, your best bet is to take advantage of the rules, sumo wrestlers can't touch the ground, so submission is an option. Striking is too, but you'd be better off using a sniping style of striking with fast jabs, and precise kicks. A sumo wrestler will catch you off the initial push so you'll want to move out of the way as quick as possible. @subliminal You're right, in that punch wouldn't have knocked out a sumo wrestler but look at Naruse's positioning. He's in close enough range for an elbow, or a knee. Or if he really wanted to hurt him, his testicles. In essence, this is a stupid manga and we should enjoy it for such, if you want realism, read Holyland.

@SeraphBorealis

The punch would have affected the diaphragm just fine. Especially considering the Rikishi is much larger in proportions to normal people. It would be even more affected. Rikishi's don't train their stomachs like that, they lower their bodies to be able to evade being hit from certain angles and to protect their stomach as while you can firm your stomach up to an extent a larger stomach equals a larger weak point. So when they do their initial charge, their body is lowered, decreasing the chance of having places like their stomach hit by slaps. Not only that unlike open handed slaps that cause shock, a punch has more of a focused impact it has a smaller circumference of impact similarly to hitting someone with a spear rather than flat surfaced weapon (like a shield) while the shield provides more surface area, the spear is made to pierce and impact with the tip making it more plausible to cause more lethal damage.

You're also using those rules in a place where sumo wrestling rules don't apply. This isn't a circular ring with a ring out, this is literally Vale Tudo.
