Why are we supposed to root for the main characters again?
They are really incompetent at this entire thing and not in a funny way.

I feel like the story lost a lot of its charm after the author decided to start a tournament arc.

Initially it was a quiet story about an old man finding a new hobby and learning that his life still very much goes on. even though he had to bear losses (his wife dies, he cannot hunt like when he was younger anymore due to changed regulations and his age), life is still worth living.

and now? we have bunch of weirdos who take videogames way to seriously and the author thinking that people of perceived 'fringe' groups also playing video games is somehow special.

there are still some good parts left. the conflict of the millionaire girl with her father, the torn-appart and reconnected family of the coach, sakura + child.
but the author drowns this by letting the tournament take way too much space. he should really reconsider what this story was originally about (e.g. human connections) and return there.

edit: it also feels like the MC has very little character developement. him picking up video games was basically the only big thing, afterwards it often feels like he only gets pulled along by the other characters, but rarely decides something.

Everyone also got the worf effect after they team up with yamano as his team is full of top players who still practice but somehow meow doesn't even know what a coach is and they can't even qualify the first prelims

they were also setting up a different FMC as the protege of matagi (his grand daughter's school mate) then just dropped her off the face of the earth once they introduced the cat cosplayer and the tournament arc

yeah. before matagi was unique, and u cant place anyone else in his spot in the story cuz it wouldnt work. now, u can replace him with literally any other gamer and the story would be exactly the same.

Bro same. The earlier chapters were full of charms. Now it's just your standard battle shounen shit. Why couldn't this be a slice of life? Hell, electronic store kun got forgotten completely.
