This is an incredibly relatable feeling. I was always an extremely paternal man. I saw a lot of crap in my grade school years. Thankfully I was not abused myself, but I felt the guilt of never being able to do things. Several childhood friends did not make it when faced with abuse, drugs, fatherlessness, etc.

I've had guys a few years younger than me under my wing (off and on) for years. I had to give them just enough protection to grow, but it proved painful at times. But seeing the change firsthand made it all worth it. One Indian guy still calls me "big bro". I invited him to my wedding lol.

This chapter proves therapeutic looking back at those times. If there's anyone reading this who feels likewise, you may have a calling. Keep your ears open and be brave.
