No one will ever see this but I decided to share this anyway.
I was curious on this page as to the naming conventions of the gold digger swimmers
If it's not obvious already, they all end in '-ima', and after looking it up, (島) means Island. But the naming conventions don't stop there.
Let's start with the cute freshman, Kikaijima. Her name is actually the name of an island of the same name (喜界島) and the land of the island is made up from uplifted coral over thousands of years but I digress.
For the vice captain Tanegashima, he's also the name of an island of the same name (種子島) which is also the location where firearms were said to have been introduced in 1543, and firearms were generally called "Tanegashima" for a long while because of this.
Finally the captain, Yakushima (屋久島) is also an island. It's a world heritage site for endangered loggerhead Sea turtles and is also the testing site for Hondas hydrogen fuel cell research but that's besides the point.
TL;DR all of their names are direct references to islands belonging to the Kagoshima Prefecture (鹿児島県), with the Freshman Kikaijima being the smallest, the vice captain Tanegashima 2nd largest, and the captain Yakushima being the largest island referenced.
