I've read and worked on the series from start till now and in the future, however the series was much better when it was just focusing on Mona and Medaka. That was the whole charm of the story, we didn't need a harem and it felt extremely forced, in other harems you wouldn't be surprised but in this? Tomo joining? What the fuck moment. The majority in the west thinks alike. You can really see the quality of the manga shining when Mona is doing things. And that is also the opinion largely shared by japanese fans (at least in the wsm app's comments for example).
The harem aspect also is not a competition, Mona has by far more screentime than any other due to her being the protag in the first place, obviously the protagonist is not gonna lose.

Ok, but that's what I'm saying it's not really that the trope is bad (unless your personal opinion says otherwise) but that it's bad in this specific story. As you've put it the story functions better without those aspects in them and the story's charm and fun lie solely in the interactions between Mona and Medaka, and in some regards, I can agree with that. Summarily, my point was it's not the trope but how it is handled in the story that determines its worth, and in the case of Medaka, you feel that this "new" harem aspect of it is handled poorly and doesn't fit in the story, cuz there's a good deal of harems that work perfectly well as romcoms and stories, like Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa, Risou No Himo Seikatsu, or 100 Girlfriends.

Thats why i like some independent small publishers, or webmanga (Boku no Kokoro, Kubo-san etc) - bcs there authors can afford to write what they want and how they want it.

Back up there -- Kubo-san is decidedly neither of those things. It ran in Weekly Young Jump, currently the fifth-best-selling manga magazine in the country and the second-best-selling seinen magazine, home to Tokyo Ghoul, Kaguya-sama, Gantz, Kingdom, and Golden Kamuy.

Did this need to turn into another generic Harem Manga?

Well... I mean, this has had the harem tag for as long as I remember lol. Most harem titles are rather generic, romance too for that matter. I honestly wouldn't have minded if this was just about Mona trying to get his attention instead of a harem. Although, personally, I don't really mind it as much in this case since MC isn't indecisive (at least not yet) and isn't dense for the sake of being dense.

I mean, he is dense to not have noticed, but I kind of give it a pass since he's more focused on abiding by his teachings and his whole goal in the first place. That being said though, I'd love to see more depth and growth of his character since a kiddie pool has a little more depth than he does.

Normally I'm all over the hardworking losing heroine in romcoms.
But this kouhai girl does nothing for me. Ugly design, bad character introduction, plain personality other than being forceful, she has literally nothing in common with MC, the reason she's in love with him makes zero sense.
And all the chapters she's featured in are either lame or boring.

If this has been stated as a harem at the start I’d have been fine with it (I wouldn’t have read it at all in that case but it would’ve been fine), but it seemed at most a love triangle. The MC doesn’t even deserve that with how little he does so adding a generic harem after the fact has just made this worse. Harems seem to make the plot not know where it wants to go all the time and it just ruins it imo.

I believe this series start out as a decent looking romcom. And as i remember at first isnt it supposed to be medaka only pov but then we started receiving more mona pov and then now it is just everyone's pov due to the harem plot spawning out of nowhere

I agree with one of the commenters about how harem members are formed. Tbh asahi one just freaking stupid. It is logical but just stupid. the only one i like is nanba or whatever her first name is intro, where she start off by being mona wingwoman and then falling for him due to how he able to understand herself. So that kinda sweet tbh. Mona reason for falling kinda generic popular girl meet gloomy guy type of story but it is funny so why not

Also to the people complaining about it being a harem manga, if it wasn't for that, then the only option would be the main girl. Which.. isn't that great. The only bad thing is that she's still probably gonna win.
