As a glasses guy, it's a cumulative thing. The nosepads slowly irritate the skin. Especially in the summer when they trap sweat and salts under them. Once the skin is red and inflamed, the nose pads get uncomfortable.

When I sweat like hell it gets slippery and they slip down my nose easier, but I don't remember them ever hurting me. Glasses without the pads might be a different story though
