He is from 100 years ago so he is not exactly new either.

TBH, I kind of want to see how the series would go if he didn't sleep for so long. Maybe it would be like the apocalypse type.

Are the mycelia in the blood growing rapidly on the attribute substrate paper?

I find it really weird that the author thought of a quasi-scientific way of quantifying people's abilities and innate strength, but all of that scientific elaboration was just used to say shove in video game lingo: "It tests your levels! You level up! You have a Job!"

Yeah, it's easy to understand, but why go the lengths of thinking of how to make "level ups" make sense in their world, and yet still call it a "level up"?
Also, why call it "jobs"? Why not "spore class" or something?
It's just stupid.

It’s not that odd. Strength and power increases from consuming sporangium of other species. That was established early. That there’s a measurement system for it should be surprising. It’s been telegraphed throughout the story and especially once the girl showed up.

You don't seem to understand.
I don't find it weird that they "get stronger from eating the spores", but that it's culturally accepted to call it "level ups" and "jobs", i.e: gamified lingo is culturally acceptable by everyone? What, their scientists and leaders are all chuuni dorks?
Why bother trying to think of clever in-world, semi-scientific way of explaining how they get stronger, or why they are restricted in developing certain abilities due to their genetic compatibility -- only to dumb it all down by using video-game lingo?

And if that terminology was already used beforehand, I must have forgotten about it. Lord knows the updates are slow enough for that, and either way -- it doesn't mean it wasn't as weird beforehand.
