This series' romance plot is great I didn't expect the romance to be this good. I thought it was going to be more along the lines of hunting down demons.

If Mo Yan is the new master of the house, it's not like he would need to follow his old man's orders and kill his own wife. What kind of master has to follow the orders of others? He might as well not be the master. It's all up to him. 100% his own decision. No excuses left for him to avoid the responsibility for his own decisions.

@Kaarme sadly , that is not how it works in a society that uphold filial piety and social norm. What you said is possible, but it will resulting in him being scorned by the others, deemed not trustworthy, and basically every possible social rejection from "morally good" people

Edit: unless there are many people who thinks the same

@anzuda No, in this case it would be true. They are a family of demon slayers. Basically a military unit. They need a very clear structure of leadership. When you are fighting with your life on the line, you don't need second-guessing. Imagine a situation in a battle where Mo Yan gives an order, but an underling doesn't want to obey before first checking it with the previous master. The time wasted could mean the destruction of the whole family. If Mo Yan's father doesn't want to hand over all the highest authority to Mo Yan, he must not make Mo Yan the master. If he still does, yet wants to retain the final word with himself, he's just a greedy, half-assed bastard.

Compare this whole thing to a kingdom or empire. There can only be one king or emperor. If a ruler abdicates, he better keep his mouth shut afterwards. If Mo Yan accepts getting pushed around by his old man in important matters, nobody in the family or outside of the family will pay Mo Yan anything but cursory attention and all will still only look at his father. That's how it goes, no matter where in the world. It's a different thing if Mo Yan himself consults his father and asks for his advice.

@Kaarme Well, what you said does makes sense and it's probably what should happen. But then again, even in today society where free thinking is a widespread concept a corporate or a big house/clan that have their previous leader as the one that holds power instead of the current leader (a.k.a Puppet Leader).

So in my opinion as to why this happen:
1. The old master still holds the power and the transition of power is either took too long to do or it is controlled by the old master how and for how long it will be done.
2. The old master still holds the secret of the family and just handling the leadership doesn't makes him the rightful leader. And even if it does, it will make the house split into 2, those who support the new master, and those who still support the old master. This will result in weakening the house and lowering the efficiency when dealing with the demon
3. This is just a plot hole made by the author

Owh, and thanks for telling me that. It never really crossed my mind

@anzuda Well, the reality is obviously more like what you said, but it's not to their benefit, like I said. Killing one's wife is a huge thing with giant ramifications, so it should be something the master decides on his own, not by following someone else's order. However, by the looks of it he at least is following such an order for now. The family also has other big internal problems with the power struggle and people acting on their own as they please, even plotting against other family members, so they basically are totally broken as a professional demon fighting force. The demons probably are laughing at them currently. In that sense, again, it would have benefitted Mo Yan immensely to tell his old man that he will handle his own wife on his own, following his own judgement. As that would have gone against the very core beliefs of the Chinese culture of filial piety, like you said, it would have underlined better than anything else that Mo Yan now considers himself the ultimate leader of the family and anyone daring to go against him would face the consequences, even if it was his own father. A new leader should show they are willing to use their authority and are not afraid of anything, to avoid some plotting by those who would like to use him/her as a tool.
