He did like her in the previous time line, he just was using a cultivation technique that made him infinitely dense. That denseness was broken when she died in the previous timeline. He was holding her dead body in his arms like "we were just play fighting/sparring this shouldn't have been enough to kill her" and became obsessed with bringing her back. She died because the Wuxia world was rejecting her soul as an outsider. He found the cursed magical artifact the MC wants to use to save her adoptive dad from her previous life on Earth and he gave up half of his soul to rewind time and bring her back to life. The curse artifact sealed his memories as part of the deal, but little bits and pieces slip through sometime. Which is why he is more obsessed in the current timeline ie the latent memories of the previous time mixed with half of his soul having been shoved into MC to bring her back. Like he's literally not whole without her now. MC has memories of the previous timeline because she has half his soul in her.

As for MC's denseness, in this previous timeline she used a Buddhist technique, named something like "golden buddha heart", that seals worldly desires. She used it in desperation and heartbreak to seal her feeling for him after being rejected like 13 times by ML and since the technique is tied to her soul it carried over to timeline 2. So she doesn't remember she was in love with him only their rivalry

It doesn't want anyone who has used it to live happily like a cruel genie. ML used the mirror in the previous tilmeline to rewind time and pull MC's soul back into her body
