This could be interpreted to be a take on people one falls out of touch with. Perhaps they were an important part of one's life for just a few years before circumstances caused them to split up--changing schools, changing jobs, job transfers, etc. It could even be someone who has changed drastically over the years, and the disappearing person could represent who they were when they were younger.
