I don't know why but this story brought back this story of this one time when I randomly bought a cheap simple 4-slice toaster for the office breakroom so I could toast the bagels that management brought in for Bagels Fridays. Then several months down someone decided to one up the toaster with a fancy toaster oven. I remember him talking to my manager about all the fancy feature of the toaster oven. People still preferred to use that cheap toaster over the toaster oven. Not that it never got used but people waited for the toaster over having to use the toaster oven for some reason.

Toaster oven takes like 2 or 3x longer because you are supposed to preheat all the extra air in the compartment, while a toaster heating element is right next to the bread. Also need to be careful not to burn your hands when removing bread from the rack , toaster you just grab the slice when it pops up. But you can toast more than bread in a toaster oven. However, I don't think people at work would regularly have the extra time to do that.

I'd think it has to do with the after care of it. Use it and now you have to be the one to clean it, worse yet if it accumulates dirt in the whole oven casing, gonna have to be you or become the office asshole. So just use the dinky toaster and have nice toasted bread with a thing people are more accepting to be a little messy/ permissibly dirtier cause of how much harder it woulb be to clean.

Unless you are putting greasy food into the toaster oven, it takes no more work to clean than a regular toaster (just empty the crumb tray from time to time).
I think its more of a familiarity/convenience thing for his coworkers to prefer the "one-click" toaster over the oven (which you need to check the settings and monitor the timing if you don't use it often).
