If I remember correctly, he fell asleep while - or after- playing a VR game, and ended up inside of a new world that was suspiciously similar to that of the game world he had been playing.
That means this manga is about to end, unfortunately.
He'll go in there, get set up to play a VR Game, and instead of a gam, he'll find himself back in his world, waking up from a surreal dream that seemed so real it's as if it actually happened.

My impression was that Serena was probably initially meant as a recurring joke character, who keeps meeting up with MC no matter what but never ends up with him despite all the other women MC keeps getting.

That said, perhaps the author is starting to waver on Serena's joke status and wants to upgrade her into a harem member.

Especially when you consider how author ended up including Dr Shouko into the harem after not seeing her for quite a while.
