This is more the publishers fault then the mangaka and author. From what I've seen of spoilers, there be a whole boatload of banging happening in the wn/ln versions of this novel.

Only with Felicia and Ines and not with Girasole in the WN at least. I read quite a bit of it at some point and the only "development" that happened after a ton of chapters was that he tries to gradually stop calling them with -san. I'm serious.

This arc is awkward because nobody is actually enjoying it. The party sure doesn't enjoy risking hometown in war and asking for a big favour from Wataru. Wataru hates everything he has to do, but couldn't not do it, because he knows he can make different between life and death there, even if he not care but his friends care. Their nobles and royalty were dealing which someone more powerful than them, don't care about them, yet crucial to them. And the enemy just knows they would be curbstomp before the fight begins.

The moment Wataru agreed to the plan, there can't be any surprise anymore. That's why this arc is so bad.

To be honest, we as readers know MC could just curbstomp the imperials single handedly. All he need to do is spam summon and unsummon the big ship on sea or land.
