A
College is typically the largest administrative division within a university. It groups together several related academic disciplines. Each college is usually headed by a
Dean.
- Scope: Very broad.
- Focus: A "College of Arts and Sciences" might house everything from Physics to Philosophy.
- Examples: College of Engineering, College of Business, College of Nursing.
2. School
The term
School is more flexible and can be used in two primary ways:
- As a synonym for "College": Some universities prefer the word "School" for large divisions (e.g., "The Harvard Business School").
- As a unit within a College: Often, a specialized program within a larger college is called a school to give it a distinct identity, especially if it is a professional program.
- Examples: A School of Music inside a College of Fine Arts, or a School of Journalism inside a College of Liberal Arts.
3. Department
A
Department is the smallest and most specific administrative unit. It focuses on a single academic discipline or a very closely related group of subjects. Departments sit underneath colleges or schools and are usually led by a
Department Chair or
Head.
- Scope: Narrow and specialized.
- Focus: Hiring faculty, designing specific course curricula, and managing degree requirements for a specific major.
- Examples: Department of Chemistry, Department of History, Department of Aerospace Engineering.
