I'm sure there are many ways to look at the story. Myself, I thought it was that the girl was already dead after having given birth and he goes to the ocean to contemplate life, the universe and everything. Upon awakening he is in a dream state, a place between two worlds and asks the guy fishing who sits high on a cliff between these two worlds of life and death. When he asks the guy, who shows that he may be death himself with his skull face and perhaps is a "fisher of souls" he says he has a bite. The bite being the soul of the girl.

Stories like this are so broad in the way one can look at them, it is almost a Zen moment to think about...
