i think the lines in rectangles are the author 's notes , and the lines in bubbles are the MC 's thought . for example , in page 1 :

- author 's notes : she bought some holy things .
- MC 's thought : these should keep me safe , probably .

and in page 16 :
- author 's notes : the grandma can only see a black mist . but the young girl can see the ghost really clearly .

grandma thinks : she is ignoring them . what a gal with big gall .
