This is gonna be a painful read. Not in how sad it is but waiting to find how mii-chan met her end. Was at least hoping to see present yamada try to find out what happened to mii-chan as we see the signs of what's about to happen to mii-chan

FWIW, I'm fairly sure the real "Mii-chan" was not murdered. (Though I might have missed something...) But her "intellectual disability" (the author's words) meant that a few of the things in the first few chapters are directly taken from stuff she actually did. There's a pretty good interview with Azuki Nene on Japanese MSN - this was after she'd come out and said "Oh, yeah, I'm the person who used that pseudonym on Twitter", but before the new version started. it's a bit of a puff piece (the interviewer going "SNS comics are so amazing, wow!" etc.), but she does go into some detail about the comic, and the more recent research she did as well as her own life experiences.

(MTL straight from the Japanese, so remember it sometimes screws up subject, gender, tense and so on.)

"When I was a student, I worked in cabaret clubs and escort cafes, and when I first started working, I did paid drinking. I decided to draw on those experiences to create a manga about working in the night industry."

"The model for Mii-chan is a girl I used to work with at a cabaret club in Kabukicho. She was really bad at kanji, to the point where she couldn't even read the menu at an izakaya. She said she had a mild intellectual disability, and she even had a disability certificate.

"While he treats even the most 'bad customer' with a smile, he also has many weaknesses. He even reveals his real name and address right away, and there have been times when regular customers have become stalkers."

In the story, there is a scene where Mii-chan is subjected to domestic violence by her boyfriend. This is based on Atsuki's own experience.

"Looking back, I was also in a codependent relationship, dependent on him. In the end, we were able to separate after it became a police matter, but I feel that it is difficult to let go of a relationship that is so dependent."

and also

"Recently, I've been talking to the girls at Toh Yoko to get ideas. The girls at Toh Yoko can seem a little hard to approach at first glance, but some of them are surprisingly friendly and tell me their stories when you talk to them."

"Toyoko" refers to the square next to Toho Cinemas in Kabukicho, Tokyo. Children and young people who have no place to go at home or school gather here.

In December 2023, the Metropolitan Police Department conducted a sweep in the area, taking 28 people into custody, both male and female, between the ages of 12 and 19. Among them was a sixth-grade girl.

(That area is directly in a bunch of the early Yakuza games, for instance. 1 through... 5 all have it, I think? It's been a while. Sure puts it in a different light.)
