her mom is narcissistic and manipulative. you can see that when she says she was never able to do something so yamada should do it. she doesnt really care about yamada, just how yamada can make her feel better about herself while putting yamada down.

Her mother does care for her, but in a very twisted way, but I agree that her mother controlling her life and preventing her from enjoying a childhood did stunt her social skills, making her desperate for a human connections, even considering someone with cognitive and mental defects a close friend, when they are very difficult to deal with, even with professionals helping them.
with narcissistic parents it's all about "how my kids are making ME feel" takes priority over parental love. yamada doing what she wants and being the person she wants her to be is all that matters. its not that she really cares about her daughter, more that her daughter not doing what she thinks is right makes her feel bad and that's no good. In some less extreme cases that might actually end up ok but most of the times it leads to trauma and estranged children.

If you read the later chapters, it is revealed that the mother was not allowed to go to university by her father, and so she decided to ensure that her daughter gets the opportunities she never got. Unfortunately the mother never realised that not letting her daughter be a child, have fun, and make friends is what stunted her emotional growth leading to the conclusion we have today.
