When my wife and I were planning our wedding, a realtor called us up out of the blue and we were renting a house, so we found a house we liked and slashed our wedding budget and bought the house instead. Fast forward 24 years and we have equity and thanks to covid I get to telecommute. My work is an hour drive with no traffic so now I am saving money. Raised two kids in this house and while there have been lean times it is nice to have a home and not worry about adjoining neighbors. Save save save people.

I think it's less a statement on Japanese people in general, and more of Ikuma being impulsive and bad with money. They've established he's like this before and that there's a very good reason Sumika is the one who handles their finances--left to his own devices Ikuma would be living paycheck to paycheck or worse.
