Here's a hunch I have: he's not untalented. He's just unmotivated. He has no ambition or drive. And the story will be about him gaining it in one way or another.

Incorrect, he lost motivation because no matter how much he tried, he didn't have the talent for the skills he practiced for. Cooking and cleaning are what he is good at, and he knows it. But what him and other people expect are what his mother was known for.

When i first started the manga i got to half the iner cover image and tought:
"Oh, its an Ouran style harem or is yaoi?"

Then the second part of the image loaded and i identified the skirts.

"Wait no, this is yuri!"

I took a moment to notice this is standard harem.
