Author really, introduced some characters just to kill them off in the same chapter. at least now we know no one is truly safe on this manga's world...

.... Welp... the author decided to not be even one bit vague about where this is going.

And there are some "implications" about what these mermaids are with the last pages.

The way it killed the last mermaid was awfully malicious, if that thing wanted simply to eat it could have just bitten her, instead, it captured and slowly made a claw.

Man that was a good chapter. They could have drawn out the mystery and suspense.
I felt the way they gave the new information was a bit heavy handed. Like it could have been delivered more organically.

Say, the starfish girl really went after the boy.
She's lurking under the dock ready to pounce. But before she attacks, the passive form of the Carnivore floats behind her. (Us readers still don't know what it is yet.) and a looming shadow appears over her face. She turns around. Cut to her face of terror. Crunching noises and blood fill the water.

Then cut back to land were the boy safe and sound and unaware of the danger he just avoid.(Maybe it would be a good time to bring Onee-san and him back together. As she comes to save him.)

Last page would be ominous and tranquil scene the passive Carnivore in the water. ALONE.

The mermaids have an taste for human flesh/blood.
Their desire to leave the sea and become human to escape the "eat or be eaten" cycle of the ocean.
They believe consuming the flesh of a human will allow them to become one.

Ok so she did defiantly try to eat him or at least she lost her senses for a bit.
Moreover it seems like they all use to be human at some point.
