It was a blink and you'll miss it panel, but I like that we kind of finally have confirmation of whether Merlin has truly embraced being a little girl or is just overacting to fit their role in the mission.
"I've never even thought about who I am - I'm just enjoying the present"
So in a way the answer is neither and both. She's embraced it, but mostly because it's where she is and what she is as opposed to anything deeper. That's a pretty zen approach to the issue of identity.
i mean... identity could be considered as two parts anyways, one part being your perception of self and the other part being other's perception of your self...
your perception of self could include your memories and stimulus from your body while the outsider's perception relies on what they see from you, being your conveyed attitude and appearance.. and then there's also your perception of their perception of your identity, which is also rather important to be able to understand your own perception of self...
identity i'd say is pretty much a game of telephone between you and the outside world... which is way easier if it is predictable.. that's where the identity issues present in this chapter starts messing around at..
outside stimulus is required for a clear understanding of self, since humans are social creatures, things like hierarchy and categorization is a subconscious standard we humans have..
it is possible to lose the 'true' self if one is to be confused of all the mismatched stimuli caused from changing roles too frequently, i think such stuff could also be observed in adolescence albeit in a really mild manner and such stuff would commonly be assisted by imbalances caused by the stage... (yeah, nah im not finishing this statement, my head hurts the further i try to describe my thought process in legible words... im not removing this paragraph because i want you guys to know the existence of my effort writing this, same as our secretary over here wanting their existence to be acknowledged over centuries to come.)
in short..
a person can go insane if their stimuli is overloaded with information... if you change your body and your roles, then it is possible.
merlin is doing the right thing of not fretting over every egg, seems to be that they're making the mother of all omelettes..
