No, I'd say the writing is more lame in this regard. There's little to no reason for the sister to be acting that way (even if I think she's trolling), especially towards a kid. As you said, it's a very poor (not to mention unbelievable) way of creating tension.

I concur. This is so contrived that it makes the character so unbelievably retarded as a result.

Oh, my sister is married who is looking after her husband's nephew? Let's just pull her out of that marriage and just kick the kid out. Yeah, that'll go over smoothly.

This was just a massive ass pull from the mangaka to create drama and I'm astounded that this was allowed to pass through the editor's desk. WTF.

but from a realistic perspective i'll admit that I've often witnessed adults who just genuinely seem to think it's okay to mess with a kid's head as if a 9 year old can just move on from it once you finally say "I'm just joking!" (and then they're always surprised when the kid never really connects with them properly.)
