I think Abel is both in awe and wary of Ryo's power. While it's true that Ryo is a good and kind guy, he's still an unknown even to Abel who has known him the longest. The only other entity who knew of Ryo for longer is the Dullahan (the headless knight who taught Ryo his martial arts).

^^^^^ this, even tho Abel knows Ryo is good in nature and get along so well he is still a random guy that was living alone in the middle of a forest on the other side of those death mountains and one shoting monsters left and right with out breaking a sweat, you always have to be wary of immeasurable power like that.
