Both of them are exactly the same as this one, if you get right down to it. Sure, maybe the writing is better- or worse- but no matter how much you polish or detail a trope, it's still the same.
And tropes have nothing to do with writing, they're just stereotypes.
Take SMG, the arc they are in right now is defending Blue Carp Town and the kid with a tattoo on his back. He wont give up the kid for an easy out; family comes first. First army guy comes up, "better do what I say"; subordinate's cocky. Gets told no and threated off, brings in boss, same deal. War starts, 10k of the villain force is gone, boss won't give in or up, he's arrogant.
Get what I mean?
