In the novel version, Link was kinda set up during the Promotion Exam. Maro mentions that high level monsters move faster than human perception, yet adventurers could still keep up and direct their monsters. He figured there was a trick, but he didn't know what it was at the time. I don't think that bit was adapted in the manga.

She acted and protected Zashiki-warashi.
When we realized what that meant, Zashiki-warashi both roared at the same time,

The card automatically assigns half of its power to the barrier protecting the Master by default, though this depends on the Master's level. So why didn't they know the word ‘Link’?
There are three major reasons. One is that the Link is basically a secret, confidential. Link, which allows the control of cards remotely, is generally kept secret because it can be used to attack other adventurers, disguised as a monster attack at first glance.
The TV programs as well, the broadcast with information about Link will be cutout, and if you use the word "Link" on social networking sites, you will not be able to post it as the actual word you meant here.

One could reason that it is trying to return to its original self. Thus, events like Maro getting Renka, Elisa, and Yuki in the gacha, the amrita that gives Renka the skill, and many other things that happen in the novel are controlled by that being inside Renka

i think they already hint at this back at the Pied Piper of Hamelin battle (In chap 11, page 6 It has a bolt effect connecting the MC and Renka similar to page 43)

It had been foreshadowed, just not well done. It was during the fight against the Pied Piper. It was more explicit in the WN but much less so in the manga.
