Wow, they can't get away with just bombing us with Yuuna's smiles. I wish there were others here to give a better breakdown about her mental health, possible therapy solutions or the reasons behind why some people do actually put barriers up to protect themselves, I love reading such discussions.
It may be true that the barriers protect the person, but it comes with a compromise/caveat that actually causes more harm than good. In Yuuna's case, it's her trying not to feel any emotion, the thing is the latter's result is way worse than the fear of what pain emotions bring, especially since the latter can still be overcome. It's just hard to do so and seems like isolating yourself is the easier and optimal solution but that's only true superficially.
