Once he takes over that territory? He doesn't need to "win over" anyone within that territory. They are his to command. And there are dire consequences for a knight that disregards the orders of their lord.

Huh, this whole chapter could have been like, 3-4 pages. Instead they wasted half the chapter on "nuh-uhhh! You're the bad one!" "Nuh-uhhh you have no proof!"

Go on, do show us how this chapter could be done in 3-4 pages. Just a rough sketch would do.

Indeed. This was a political power play - the textbook definition of the term, even. (No, really, it is. Definition 3, as seen here: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/power-play) Shortening it by that much would have amounted to a gross violation of the "Show, Don't Tell" rule of writing which the likes of Chuck Palahniuk and the late Earnest Hemmingway are proponents of. It would have removed all of the drama and made this into the literary equivalent of choking back plain seltzer water.
