tho more to the point, the reason why he ends up stabbing her in the original is both a spoiler and also never explicitly stated

Basically, she has a magic stone in her chest, close to her heart. Ren has an ability to (iirc, it's been a while) turn magic stones into magic swords. Through some circumstances, shit happens and Ren needs the power but for whatever reason Lycia can't give it normally... and hence stabbing and magic stone extraction. Hahaha.

as for why MC is so scared, it's because MC is slightly paranoid to begin with, and he has absolutely 0 info on all the stuff Ren goes through, so he has absolutely no confidence nor any real basis for confidence that he can somehow avoid the stabbing.

tbh, when i saw her saying that she won't give up i thought she was going to be like those selfish self centred princess types i was even considering dropping this but just a few chapters later she completely won me over, this series actually has some of the most reasonable and mature characters it almost makes up for the rarity of serious fight scenes

i can believe that. I love to play xcom, but that doesn't mean I enjoy actually fighting or leading a squad lol.

Exactly, he's finding out life in the frontiers, even in a magical world, is tougher than he knew. His priorities shifted into taking care of his family and the village, I respect him for that, this is his real life now, he doesn't countenance gallivanting off to deal with the game plot as a good thing. Family comes first
