I don't know if they did or didn't, but the TL probably did it for panel size more than anything, fitting jp to english translations in the speech bubbles is a bitch sometimes
That was my presumption as well, but “Xmas” ≠ “Christmas”, so they shouldn't have done that.

I was right that they didn't. While that is one X-looking メ, it's still very much “Merry Christmas”. Bad translation.
I read it as Merry Christmas in my head. Though, I read any Xmas as Christmas, do people in the US say iks-mas or eeks-mas? Like in XBOX? I always thought it's just a shorthand.

Yes people pronounce the X. It's definitely just shorthand to many people, but some use it as a way of avoiding “Christ”, and some see all uses of it as that, so they're not equivalent terms and it really is a bad translation.

Xmas is a perfectly reasonable and common abbreviation of Christmas.

In every bit of its etymology it is still dripping with Christ in meaning and symbolism.

This translation is fine.

Did they really say “Xmas” in the Japanese? Doubtful.
They write it out that way sometimes. Japan is the monarch of shorthanding words.
Remote control? Nah, too long. Remocon!
Disrespect? Too much! Disuru! Mailing address? Aughhh, no. Meruado!

So Xmas fits right in!

I feel like it's more of a typesetting choice. Fully typing out "Christmas" into the confines of that jagged speech bubble really wouldn't have looked good, and shrinking the font size would have made it less readable and unfitting for the joyous exclamation it was meant to be. Xmas is a reasonable substitute for the language being translated into, IMO.

I get this arguement, but I simply disagree. The typesetting should bend to the translation, not the other way around.
