This chapter covered an interesting dynamic I've noticed between the genders when dating. Bowling (or competitive activities) are often a way for the man to show "competence" in something so that 1. the woman gets to praise him, making him feel good, and 2. the woman feels more attraction towards him in that moment because he appears to be competent. Of course, most of the time, both parties know that it's silly, but those instincts are absolutely there and govern how we feel quite a bit. Well, this is also dependent on the guy actually being good at it, and it usually applies to physical activity.
There is the alternative, where the man (often deliberately but not necessarily) loses so that the woman gets to be happy winning. There is nuance here, because it's a fine line between "he is incompetent" and "yay I won."
It's not always so deep, but there is often this kind of song and dance to intergender dynamics. It's kinda fun to see how earnest she is about it here, genuinely just wanting an opportunity to make him feel good.
