It is pretty funny, but it's exactly how it should be! Character writing this good is the outcome of the characters coming alive in the author's mind, to the point they get a strong sense of what a character would or wouldn't do or say, and have the characters guide the plot along.

There's no question the author is just as invested in these two characters coming together as the readers, if not more! But they understand very well that it has to happen in a way that feels natural and true to the characters, or it won't be nearly as satisfying.

As a reader, having the author say exactly that (if not in so many words) is extremely reassuring!
